FAQ

What is the difference between whole blood and defibrinated blood?

Defibrinated blood is mechanically agitated to encourage clotting, then filtered during the pooling process. The finished product is blood without fibrin. “Whole blood” is blood collected with anticoagulant (such as alsevers or citrate) which will suppress the clot. Both methods are simply a way of preventing the blood’s natural process of clotting.

Why is the cost so low?

HemoStat is the leader in aseptically collected bulk animal blood. Our unique technologies and established resources allow us to sell blood for a more reasonable price than other distributors. This benefits all customers, from small research labs with limited budgets to large-scale media manufacturers with thin margins.

How long is the blood good for?

The expiration date of all animal blood products will be printed on the product label. Fresh blood is given an expiration date of 14 days from the ship date. The expiration date on frozen blood products is three years after the manufacture date. These are conservative estimates to maintain the integrity of the product, but different applications may have different requirements.

How do I dispose of the blood?

Animal blood can be carefully and thoroughly washed down any sink drain. Once the container is rinsed it can be disposed of in a normal trash receptacle.

Is it hazardous?

Our blood products are non-hazardous and non-toxic. We recommend wearing gloves and protective eyewear when handling. You can find more information on the corresponding SDS.

Can I freeze the blood for storage?

Freezing blood will cause the red cells to burst. This is a process called laking or lysing and may have an effect on your results, depending on your application. Learn more about our laked products.

Do you sell for recreational or private use?

Due to the sensitivity of the product, we only sell animal blood for professional purposes. A valid address to a company, university, or research facility will be required at the time of ordering.

What happens if my blood is contaminated?

In the rare event of a contamination, we will gladly ship a no cost replacement as soon as possible.

Do you sell collection bags?

Our custom-designed PVC collection bags, pooling bags and transfer sets are intended for animal collections of all types. They are durable enough to withstand global shipping at cold temperatures and can be customized in a variety of ways to meet your specific needs. Email us for more information.

How soon can I receive the blood after ordering?

If ordering an in-stock item before noon PST, your order will ship standard overnight and be delivered the next day.

Where can I order online?

We hope to add online ordering very soon, but you can currently order via phone, fax or email. See ordering and shipping information.
